Safe Parking Program

Many families find themselves without a home because of loss of a job, divorce, eviction or medical problems. Often, the only housing that they have is inside their own vehicles. To help these individuals and families, New Beginnings Counseling Center started a Safe Parking Program in 2006. Case managers from the agency locate safe, overnight parking spaces; provide job counseling; and help locate housing. Typically the program serves about 350 individuals in more than 125 vehicles per night. In 2013, 28 clients became employed and 63 found housing. This grant funds the salary and benefits for one additional case manager and provides cash assistance to the most vulnerable clients, typically those with significant disabilities. The cash assistance is for necessities such as vehicle repairs, registration and insurance costs, food, medical and dental expenses.
