What's New This Month?

In the September 2021 issue…

New Member Reception Enjoyed by All

Warm and welcoming, with just a touch of pepper and enough zest to make it interesting. I think that describes both the New Member Reception and the Savory Rosemary Shortbreads provided by Nan Bedford. We got requests to repeat them both! So, here’s the recipe for the shortbreads, courtesy of Nan and her source for the shortbread recipe, Carole Nichols of Take 5.

We were thrilled with the turnout for our first in-person New Member event since February of 2020. 105 Women’s Fund members, volunteers and guests enjoyed an absolutely beautiful evening at The Botanic Garden—perfect temperature, light breeze, spectacular views, and wonderful women! As you can see from the photos, we all enjoyed the venue and the opportunity to be together again.

Lauren Trujillo (Membership Chair) welcomed everyone and introduced Steve Windhager, Executive Director of The Garden and our host for the evening. While our mission does not encompass the work of The Garden, Steve expressed his sincere gratitude for our vital support of the community.

Then I offered an overview of the Women’s Fund, and Sabina White (past Research Chair) provided insights into the Research Committee’s process. We took questions from the crowd, Lauren wrapped up our evening, and we were done before the sunset—though some of our guests lingered through dusk to catch up with friends.

It was a joy to meet many of our newest members; and we’re happy that many of our guests that night have joined the Women’s Fund. The Board and Membership Committee want to give a special shout-out to Kathy Wenger, the event coordinator, and the team of 20+ volunteers that provided the welcome and warmth, as well as some pepper and zest to the evening. Well done all!

Catch Up with Our Grantees

Making large grants that change the lives of people living in our communities is one of the rewards of being part of the Women’s Fund. Learning the impact of those grants is another.

You can find out how our 2019-20 Grantees fared through the pandemic this past year by reading a summary of their final reports in the library on the Women’s Fund website.

The grantees were: 2nd Story Associates - Housing Authority of SB, Doctors Without Walls - Santa Barbara Street Medicine, Easy Lift Transportation, Goleta Education Foundation, Santa Barbara County Immigration Legal Defense Center, Santa Barbara Education Foundation, Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation, SEE International, and Showers of Blessing - Interfaith Initiative of SB County.

Membership Corner: Highlighting ‘Wine and Whine’

When the group “Wine and Whine” were asked about why they created a group, here’s what we heard:

We gathered together to drink wine, but found we had magical powers to help each other heal. We were able to provide practical and emotional support. We worked to solve post-debris flow neighborhood problems. We laugh and cry together, mourn losses and celebrate. Gathering as women-only ‘feels more therapeutic.’ When we learned of the Women’s Fund grants and the groups and projects they supported, we decided that we wanted to make supporting these groups part of our purpose in meeting.

Did You Get Your Renewal Reminder?

Last week, every member who hadn’t yet renewed for 2021 should have received a reminder to renew now. Did you get yours?

Renewing early really makes a difference:

  • It helps the Research Committee anticipate the size of the next grants pool.
  • It helps Women’s Fund volunteers avoid the year-end avalanche of renewals.
  • It means you won’t be getting more renewal reminders!

In the past 18 months, Women’s Fund contributions have been more important than ever. Many of the agencies and programs we support have played a vital role providing for the critical needs of women, children and families impacted by COVID-19. Our transformative grants help keep these agencies strong and ready to serve our community.

If you’re ready, it’s simple to renew: just click here.

And if you have any questions—about your membership or anything else—please don't hesitate to contact us. Thank you again for all the ways you support the Women's Fund!
