Nancy Harter with her grandson, Isaac

How long have you been in Santa Barbara and what brought you here? Family and job—the usual—brought us to SB in 1982.  At the time, I had regrets about moving here from the Bay Area. Needless to say, it worked out.

What is the one word you would use to describe the WF? Powerful!

When and why did you join the WF?  I joined in 2009. I knew about the WF but had no idea that I didn’t need an invitation to join and that they offered group opportunities.

What do you do when you’re not volunteering for the WF? I spend as much time as possible with my grandsons; otherwise I garden and I read (a lot of fiction).

Are you involved in any other nonprofits in town?  My nonprofit involvements have always focused on children and education.  Right now, the Women’s Fund is my sole focus.

What do you consider to be your greatest professional achievement?  In 2000, I co-chaired a successful grassroots, shoestring-budget campaign to pass a secondary school bond measure that required a 2/3 majority vote.

If you could pick three adjectives to describe yourself, what would they be?  In no particular order—decisive, organized, self-deprecating.

What's the one thing most people don't know about you?  I didn’t learn to drive until I was married. My husband was my driving instructor—and we’re still happily married.

If you could be invisible anywhere, where would you go and what would you do?  It’s not a “superpower” I’d want—even temporarily. The ability to time travel or to fly is much more appealing.
