SBCC Single Parent Achievement Program: graduate with her daughter in her arms
$ 90,000 grant
2013-14
Single Parent Achievement Program

The grant provided critical child care support for 35 low-income single mothers in SBCC's degree programs; their children were enrolled in the on-campus Orfalea Early Learning Center. The funding expanded to year-round the successful six-week summer bridge program, initiated by a state grant in 2006. That bridge program combined college class work, enrichment activities, textbook grants, financial counseling and tutoring for high potential single parents. The Women's Fund grant helped address the steep decline that SBCC had observed in the number of students who remained in college after the summer bridge program, a drop averaging 37%, due primarily to child care costs. It was leveraged with a matching CA State General Fund grant.
