$ 65,000 grant
2019-20
STEAM Lab at El Camino Elementary School

Project Description:

This grant will fund a state-of-the-art STEAM Lab at El Camino Elementary School.

The Goleta Unified School District (GUSD) adopted a new science curriculum in 2019 that promotes student competency in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM). The curriculum is best supported by hands-on learning in a lab specially designed to encourage students to collaborate, design, think, read and write like scientists and engineers. Teachers at El Camino have made do with an antiquated computer center equipped with aging desktop computers, earphones and fixed furniture.

With this grant, the existing space will be refurbished with flexible-seating furniture, interactive monitors, laptops and tablets. The lab will also be equipped with digital media production equipment including lighting, a green screen and software for video editing and design. GUSD is assuming all labor costs for the project.

El Camino has the highest poverty rate (73%) and highest percentage of English learners (41%) in the GUSD.
