Amount Awarded:
$ 65,000

Community Needs : Youth Engagement K-12

Grant Description: The Isla Vista Recreation & Park District’s after-school program at Children's Park in Isla Vista was created in 1995 to address the needs of low-income children and is the only free program in Isla Vista for children ages 5-12. The program provides daily homework assistance, arts and sports for 250 elementary students (82% of the area’s children) annually and an additional 80 families who use it for recreational purposes. The after school program takes place outdoors and is cancelled for inclement weather. This grant pays for the construction of a multi-purpose center—a 19’ x 28’ post-and-beam structure with a permanent roof and concrete patio to provide weather protection during park activities. Construction bids have been secured and an expedited county planning approval process is anticipated for this permanent improvement for Isla Vista children.
